SMCT History

----------

-----

In the fall of 1980, a small group of people in Bryson City felt it was important for the community to have access to amateur theatrical productions. From this small group, Smoky Mountain Community Theatre was formed.
On April 14, 1981, the first officers and Board were elected. The by-laws were adopted on April 22, 1981 and the dream of the Smoky Mountain Community Theatre became a reality.
In the spring of 1981 the first performance was held in the little theatre at the then new Swain County High School. During the fall of 1989, the SMCT was offered for a small rental fee the use of the old Gem Theatre in downtown Bryson City. The first performance inSMCT's new home was in December of 1989, "A Gift of Christmas" given to the community for their support of the theatre.
With each new production during the next five and a half years, the theatre was improved. The stage was expanded, curtains were hung, a moving backdrop was installed, stage lighting was added, the sound system was improved and other modifications were made. In 1996 the theatre building was purchased with the assistance of a loan from a benefactor. The final payment was made on May 1, 2001. Smoky Mountain Community Theatre has a home.
