The Gem Theatre, an important and iconic building in our community needs help. Money is needed for interior repairs and other renovations.

For those of us that grew up in Swain County the old Gem Theatre is near and dear to our hearts. The building is a landmark; revitalization is needed.

The Smoky Mountain Community Theatre has been an important part of our community since the early eighties. At first the performances were held at Swain County High School. Then later using the old Gem Theatre on Main St. in Bryson City. In 1996 the SMCT was able to purchase the Gem Theatre. The building was showing its age and improvements were needed and over the years some made. However, the pandemic had a devastating impact for the SMCT. The building is in such poor shape now that they are unable to perform, sell tickets or showcase our local talent.

Please help us with the much-needed repairs. Bryson City and Swain County both depend greatly on tourism dollars, and I believe it’s our economic engine. Everything that draws and promotes our community helps all our citizens and retail businesses. Your consideration for this Grant request is greatly appreciated.
